“Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.” (John 5:2-9)
Meaning of Bethesda
All bible dictionaries define Bethesda as “house of mercy” and a few add “flowing water” as another definition. Names in the Bible are never a coincidence, the meaning held true whether it was a cities name, a person or thing. Bethesda was the house of Gods mercy. The place that was full outcasts, the unwanted the forgotten was the same place where God would bring a angel for healing. He didn’t forget not one of his people, his mercy would extend to all of those that needed it. God’s mercy dwelt there, it was a house of mercy, not a visitation of mercy. Although the angel might have stirred the water from time to time mercy never departed. The same people that were shown no mercy from the city lived in God’s mercy.
The Location of Bethesda
During Jesus’ time, the Pool of Bethesda lay outside the city walls. To be outside the city walls meant being an outcast. It was located outside of comfort, or refuge. It was the unknown and unwanted place to be. How many have found ourselves some where we didn’t want to be but didn’t seem to have the way back?
The pool laid just outside of the walls. I’m sure those at the pool dreamed about being back inside the walls. They were so close that they could easily walk over yet they weren’t allowed in. Resistance may find you right outside of your breakthrough but don’t give up hope!
The Pool’s Atmosphere
Imagine the atmosphere. It was probably one of hopelessness, depression, and anxiety. Not only did the angel did not have a set time to come move the water but, only the first one in got healed, imagine how that put people on edge!
The Bible says that the man was unable to walk and had been so for 38 years. He needed a miracle! He was surrounded by people that were in the same situation. They were sick just waiting for their opportunity to step into the water to be made whole. The thing about people that aren’t whole spiritually, mentally, emotionally is that they can’t give to you what they don’t have.
Jesus asked the man will you be whole? The man replied I have no one to help me enter into the water. How many times have we found ourselves with no help? Do we want to be made whole? Absolutely! But, who can we trust that will be self sacrificing that would give up their own healing to heal another? Who would put someone else’s needs before them? Jesus showed that man to put his faith in God instead.
Are You the One in Need of Healing?
Have you been long awaiting your healing? Have you felt like no one is really there for you? The pool was a place were no family or friends would visit. It was not a cool place to hang out. It was filled with people that the city had turned its back to, it was filled with people that society rejected. Can you relate?
Jesus will come to you for your healing. Jesus manifests mercy and living water, they are available for you today. You see, the man thought that he needed the water to be healed but the living water came to him. God’s mercy was made flesh, he showed the lame man although it might have seemed all was lost for you God’s mercy makes a way for you to be healed without entering the water. He gave him life and life in abundance!
Your time for healing is now! There is no need to wait any longer. Tell Jesus the truth exactly how the man did. There is no one that is able to help me the way I need help. Let Christ be your help, tell him your situation and he will meet your needs.
