“And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Matthew 4:6)
The Bible is full of balance but you can interpret it as an extreme. Let me explain. You can find a verse and twist it to say what you want. That’s why there are so many people that are confused when it comes to doctrine.
Satan Uses Extremes
In the verse above Jesus is in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. It is interesting how the devil quoted scripture! He told Jesus “for it is written”. The devil knows what’s written in the Bible. He tried to use the word of God against God in the flesh!
The extreme the devil used was to say to Jesus “throw yourself off of this building because God promises that the angels will keep you from harm”. Although the scriptures do say that Go would send angels to protect Jesus the devil wanted him to kill himself.
Jesus replies it is ALSO written do not tempt the Lord thy God. Jesus used balance. One verse does not override another. Both scriptures were true at the same time. Taking a verse out of context can not only be spiritually but physically harmful!
Tension in the Word of God
I believe that all mighty God is fully capable of preserving his word until the end of time. I honestly believe that his word is preserved today! Since his word is preserved we know that all of the word is true.
Many people believe that the Bible is full of errors, inconsistencies, and even contradictions. What most people see is what I describe as tension.
Two scriptures that seem to not hold true together is tension. God doesn’t go to the extreme with anything. He takes the balanced approach. An example is: God is a judge but he is also mercy, grace, and love. God is all of those at the same time.
Where Extremes Lead
Extremes have led many people down the wrong path. It has lead to church splits, poverty, greed, and overall foolishness. I have seen videos of some people picking up venomous snakes because Jesus said we will take up serpents and it will not harm us. Remember that verse Jesus told the devil? You will not tempt God. Purposely playing with deadly snakes sounds a lot like tempting God.
Are You Currently Holding on to Any Extreme View Points?
If you are then it’s great that you realize it! The next step is to renew your mind to the mind of Jesus. Ask him to show you the complete truth, and he will lead you to the truth!
