“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth saying we are the temple of God. In 2 Peter 1:14 Peter calls his body a tabernacle. We see that they understood that the spirit of God no longer dwells in buildings but in men. As the spirit of God lives within every believer we have become the house of God.
God has always intended to live in the hearts of man (Jer 31:33). God wanted to dwell in men, not a tabernacle, so the physical components of the tabernacle was actually meant for our bodies.
An altar is where sacrifices and offerings are made. Since we are now one with the Spirit of God it is our reasonable service to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice. So, our sacrifices are within ourselves, it is a spiritual altar. What we leave at the altar are pride, malice, envy and all sin.
Fire on the Altar
We no longer have to go and sacrifice an animal since Christ is the lamb of God. Jesus became sin so that man would no longer be separated from God, that would in turn then become the righteousness of God thru Christ. He became the physical offering and sacrifice so that we can become the spiritual offering.
Leviticus 6:13 says that fire shall ever be burning upon the altar. We present ourselves to the Lord with a burning passion, a deep love to commune and fellowship with our Creator. Christ desires for us to be always on fire for him. Fire symbolizes many things. Fire upon an altar shows that it is being used, it is being reverenced.
Baptized with Fire
In Matthew chapter 3 John the Baptist says that Jesus would come and baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire. Now that we are the temple of the Lord the fire is never to go out, just the way it didn’t go out at the altar in the old testament. Since the altar is now spiritual so is the fire.
The scriptures say quench not the spirit. Another word for quench is extinguish. A fire or things on fire is what is extinguished. Don’t let the spirit be suppressed or go out. That baptism that you received of the Lord continue with that passion, zeal, and love. The fire is to always burn in our hearts for the Lord, do not become stagnant in your walk with God, once we do it is easy to become lukewarm.
Why the Altar needs to Burn Within Us
Without the fire burning, we will not be able to fulfill our assignment on Earth. The Holy Spirit is needed to guide us to our destiny. Therefore in order to clearly hear his voice, he cannot be quenched.
We were not created to mediocre. Our bodies and spirits are God’s. We belong to the One that created the heavens and Earth. Our supernatural calling can only truly be fulfilled with an altar on fire for the things of God.
